How to Play Spider Solitaire
Two decks (104 cards) are dealt into 10 tableau columns. Build sequences of cards in descending order within the columns. A complete sequence from King to Ace (in the same suit) is automatically removed. Deal extra cards from the stock when needed. Clear all 8 sequences to win.
- 1 suit — Easy: all clubs, pure sequence building
- 2 suits — Medium: spades and hearts mixed in
- 4 suits — Hard: all four suits, sequences must match suit to remove
- Empty columns can hold any card or sequence
About Spider Solitaire
Spider Solitaire was invented in 1949. Microsoft popularized it by bundling it with Windows 98 as part of a Plus! pack, and later as a standard Windows card game. The name "Spider" comes from the 8 foundation piles needed to win — like 8 spider legs.
- How is Spider different from Klondike Solitaire?
- Spider uses two full decks and 10 columns instead of one deck and 7 columns. Sequences must eventually be same-suit to remove them. It's generally considered more challenging.
- What difficulty should a beginner start with?
- Start with 1-suit mode to learn the mechanics, then progress to 2-suit and finally the very challenging 4-suit version.
